Gum Disease
Periodontal disease is a chronic bacterial infection that affects the gums and bone supporting the teeth. Gum inflammation is due to bacterial plaque colourless sticky mass that forms on the tooth surface.
Stages
Gingivitis: Mild inflammation of gum tissue. Gums become red swollen and tender. It also may bleed while brushing / flossing.
Early periodontitis: Gingivitis if let untreated will lead to further inflammation spread to the alveolar bones resulting in periodontal pockets or space between tooth and gums.
Moderate Periodontitis
Increased gingival recession in turn deepens the pockets and more calculus accumulation at the gumline. Teeth mobility occurs due to moderate bone loss.
Severe Perodontitis
Major bone loss results in more mobility of tooth leading to tooth loss. Pus may develop and visible boils will be present in this stage.
Treatment
Non surgical: Scaling, root planning and curettage.
Surgical: Pocket reduction, regenerative procedure, Crown lengthening, soft tissue graft.
